Rob Voland could sing before he could talk. He mastered the trumpet at an early age, and as a teenager, found his voice on a guitar that he won at a contest given by a local music store.
Rob Voland is a musician and artist in the truest sense. His music transcends genre or style. Skilled on multiple instruments, and making use of sounds and materials that he finds in the world around him, Rob cannot help creating music that expresses his emotions in a powerful way. Drawing on an eclectic blend of musical influences, including not only greats such as Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young or John McLaughlin but also many lesser-known bands and musical traditions from other cultures, Rob creates new music that opens listeners' minds to a new experience. The chord progressions of his pieces often go in unexpected directions; the ethereal quality of his vocals is as poetic as the lyrics themselves. Knowing that much of Rob's music is produced by one individual, using a multi-track recorder and playing instruments ranging from a Stratocaster to a spoon, only adds to the mystery and appeal of his work.
Rob is a native of Vermont, U.S.A., but has played around the U.S. and internationally. In addition to his musical talents, Rob builds bicycles from spare parts, configures cars to run on vegetable oil, and grows organic vegetables in his homemade greenhouse. Rob currently lives in Paris, where his exposure to a new language and culture will certainly make its way into his musical expressions.
"I think the best way of describing Rob Volands 'The Secret Code' EP would be to liken it to a teenager who is struggling to come to terms with growing up. It's beautifully dark and moody, brimming with that low rumble of a troubled childhood while still kicking out that relaxed style that's so accustom to the trouble free life. It's superb lounge and mood music which wouldn't be out of place among the very best; it has clearly been put together by a gifted musician."
- Dave Scotford (Author of No Bull; The Music Industry)
"'G.R.V.' has funky bass and guitars and a lounge beat - it melts into 'Do You Still...', a funkified Beatlesy track with hints of Kula Shaker."
- Michael Beck (the-mag.me.uk)
"Rob’s music is dark, brooding, and thought provoking. Influenced by Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, John McLaughlin, as well as lesser-known artists and musical traditions from other cultures, his music will draw you in and change your perspective."
